During June 15–21, 2025, the School of Digital Technology, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) was honored to showcase its flagship environmental research project at the Thailand Research Expo 2025, held at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre, CentralWorld, Bangkok. The university’s participation was supported by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

The featured works included:
???? Smart Waste Management System
???? Nine Waste Art Toys

These innovations were led by Dr. Kemachart Kemavuthanon, a lecturer at the School of Digital Technology, and his research team. The smart waste management system has been under continuous development since 2017 through strong collaboration with local administrative organizations.

This system integrates digital technology with local community engagement to sustainably manage hazardous waste at the community level. It supports processes from waste sorting, data recording, and analytics to disposal and information transfer, enabling more effective and accurate waste management practices.

Currently, the system has been adopted by 143 local administrative organizations (LAOs) in Chiang Rai Province and expanded to eight provinces nationwide. Key innovations include:

  • A Waste Forecasting System that estimates waste volume using demographic and household data

  • An IoT-based Garbage Truck Tracking System that analyzes routes, fuel efficiency, and cost-effectiveness

???? Project outcomes include:

  • Over 400 tons of hazardous waste safely processed

  • More than 8.2 tons of toxic residue reduced from communities

  • Over 1,003 tons of carbon footprint reduced

  • 15 million THB/year saved in waste management costs

Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 3.96 times

???? The project has received wide national recognition, including:
???? Prime Minister’s Digital Award 2023 – Digital Community of the Year
???? Best Impacted Research Project of the Year 2023
???? Industrial Collaborative Project of the Year 2025 (MFU Award)

The School of Digital Technology extends heartfelt congratulations to the research team for their commitment to creating impactful, community-driven innovation. This project exemplifies MFU’s mission to generate knowledge that leads to well-being and a sustainable future, aligning with its vision of balanced development across environment, economy, and society.
